About Urchin 6

Urchin software corporation was bought by Google in 2005. At that time, Urchin was modified to create Google Analytics, the reason why they have so many similarities.

Urchin 6 works by processing your web server logs, grabbing logs from different sources, processing them, and storing the processed data in a central location.

Track Unique Visitors

There are two possible tracking methods, one using a combination of the client’s IP and User Agent, the other using the Urchin Traffic Monitoring (UTM) method, forcing a GIF hit to the server and maintaining a user’s information in a cookie in their browser. The latter is described in this site and is the preferred method, however both do work. Urchin 6 can process any historic log you may have using the IP + User Agent method as long as both of these fields have been logged.

Own your data

Urchin 6 is a software solution that is installed on your own server, so you are in control of the data it processes.
